Shippensburg University has earned a national honor for its support of veterans.
The university was ranked 44th in the publication Military Times EDGE and its recent listing of Best for Vets: Colleges 2013. According to the publication, approximately 300 four-year colleges and universities were reviewed on various criteria.
“The men and women who valiantly serve or have served our country at home and abroad deserve our thanks and our support,” said President Bill Ruud. “At Shippensburg, we take seriously our responsibility to support our veterans and this is a nice acknowledgement of our efforts.”
Criteria, according to the publication, included such areas as whether a school participates in the Veterans Affairs Department’s Yellow Ribbon program, has a veterans office, has staff dedicated to veteran-specific work and provides academic help for veterans.
The university has a long history of support for returning veterans or current students in military service. In September, the Veterans Resource Center was officially opened on the second floor of the CUB to provide space and support for returning veterans as they make the transition into higher education.
