A new parking lot at the Cumberland Valley Rail-Trail trailhead is paved with the rich history of Shippensburg University, literally! When Shippensburg Station, a multi-use event space and home of the boxcar museum, needed materials to create a public parking area Shippensburg University provided an alternative to macadam.
When old residence halls were demolished to make way for Ship’s current suite-style halls, the grindings from the buildings didn’t go to a landfill. Instead, Ship saved them to be repurposed in future construction projects. Ship collaborated with Shippensburg Station and Dave’s of Chambersburg to haul and roll the grindings, creating a parking area giving visitors access to the trail, the boxcar and the campus.
