Women hailing from Franklin and Cumberland counties can consider themselves well on their ways to being healthier and better informed on topics relating to their unique health considerations as females after attending WellSpan Health’s second annual Women’s Wellness Day on Saturday, February 8.
Co-sponsored by Shippensburg University, there was a record showing at the free event, which featured sessions from WellSpan Health providers on topics such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, heart disease, nutrition, breastfeeding and stress management.
The day also featured free screenings, including bone density, blood pressure and body composition tests.
“Shippensburg University is dedicated to ensuring Shippensburg is a strong and vibrant community. Individual wellness is an important component of that. We are gratified to share this mission with a strong partner like WellSpan,” noted Shippensburg University President Dr. Laurie Carter. “We welcomed the opportunity to make our campus a destination for women to spend a day on their wellness and self-care.”
“We’re excited to be expanding services in the Shippensburg and Carlisle areas to help support our priority of providing ease of access to health care. Our patients shouldn’t have to drive for the care they need,” said WellSpan Health President and CEO Roxanna Gapstur, PhD, RN. “No distance is easy to drive – especially when you or a loved one is sick. This event not only provided free information and screenings, but also made the women in attendance aware of all the services WellSpan provides them close to their homes.”
Gapstur and Carter participated in a lunchtime question-and-answer session that discussed their personal backgrounds; experiences finding balance as working mothers; and the importance of health and wellness.
“As women, we often become busy caring for everyone around us and neglect to take time for ourselves, but it’s important for us to be aware of the health resources available to us and age-appropriate screenings we should be getting,” explained Gapstur. “This women’s event is designed to empower the women who attend by arming them with the information they need to make better health-care decisions for themselves and their families.”
Presented by WellSpan Health and Shippensburg University, this year’s event was held in Shippensburg University’s Ceddia Union Building.
