Breann Scheckells is a May 2020 graduate of Shippensburg University’s Communication/Journalism, Public Relations Concentration, B.A. degree program. She also completed the Business Minor.

Scheckells came to Ship from Manchester Valley High School in Manchester, Maryland. Her number one reason for joining the Ship family was that her program was accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

“The fact that SU is one of only three schools in PA with the accreditation is astounding,” Scheckells said.

Scheckells appreciated the opportunity to get involved with student media groups right away. She went on to become the PR director for The Slate and a member of PRSSA. She also joined In-Motion Dance Troupe on campus and the American Marketing Association.

Public relations wasn’t always Scheckells’ first choice for her major concentration. She credits the Career, Mentoring, and Professional Development Center and the alumni job shadow program with helping her find the right calling. Additionally, she found the opportunities to build one-on-one relationships with her professors to be extremely beneficial.

Many students are lucky to find themselves in a position to complete an internship. During her time at Ship, Scheckells completed four. These positions were with Tierney, Forrester Farm Equipment, D&H Distributing and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

“It is in these internships that I was able to apply the knowledge from the classroom in a real-life setting. I believe with this experience under my belt that I will be able to get a job shortly after graduation,” Scheckells said.
