Junior communication/journalism major Mackenzie Mitchell took a leap of faith transitioning from the suburbs of Philadelphia to a place where there are more cows than people.

However, she soon realized that home isn’t just a place; it’s a feeling. It’s the joy warming up on the dewy, morning grass with her teammates on the Women’s Soccer. Or the nervous excitement before a show as sports director for Ship’s student-run news station, SUTV. It’s a feeling of family.

“I couldn’t imagine myself at any other school. The minute I walked on this campus and committed to play soccer here everything felt so right. I found my people, lifelong friends that I consider family, and I couldn’t imagine life without them. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity of being a student-athlete while also excelling in the classroom. I am forever grateful I picked Shippensburg,” the scholar-athlete said.

With a focus in electronic media, Mitchell is confident the hands-on experience she is receiving with Ship’s ACEJM accredited communication/journalism program will prepare her for her dream job.

“I’ve always wanted to be a sports anchor or reporter. I found my niche for being in front of a camera and I have always had a passion for writing and sports. I hope one day you will be able to turn on your TV and see me doing what I love,” she added.

In the winter of her sophomore year, Mitchell had the chance to work for Fox Sports. She ran the sidelines taking notes for a cameraman, Skip Clark. She experienced all of the behind the scenes action and it solidified the decision of her future career.

“It was the best day of my life! The whole experience was so surreal and it made me so happy that I chose to pursue a career that I love.”

Mitchell, a graduate of Spring-Ford Area High School, continues to work towards her dream by serving as an intern for the Communications and Marketing Department at Shippensburg University.
