As a special education and early childhood education major, sophomore Ashley Smith saw the powerful, positive connection Shippensburg University has to GBLUES. Students at the Grace B. Luhrs Unversity Elementary School help make Ship the only university in Pennsylvania with an on-campus public elementary lab school.
So last year, in a desire to give back to this learning resource, Smith organized a contest with the efforts of the Student Government Association to raise funds for school supplies. GBLUES director, Holly Garner, jumped at the opportunity, knowing her students would relish the chance to get creative.
The SGA and Smith challenged GBLUES students, grades K-6, to create a new logo for Shippensburg University. 25 imaginative entries came pouring in last year, but one design stood out.
The winning designer was Tristan Crawley, a current 4th-grade student. According to Garner, “The design chosen is very representative of our goals here at SU- celebrate diversity and create a sense of belonging”.
Crawley’s design features a rainbow flag, peace sign, and different languages stating, “You Are Welcome Here”.
Smith explained, “After choosing a winner, a campaign was created to sell the shirts to students at the university and to the families of GBLUES students”.
All profits from this T-shirt sale will benefit the GBLUES student body. This event/fundraiser is supported and sponsored by Shippensburg University’s Student Government Association.
