A book Dr. John Bloom coauthored with the late Matthew Bentley has gone to press and is due to be released on December 1. The book is entitled, “The Imperial Gridiron: Manhood, ‘Civilization,’ and Football at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.” It focuses upon how this school, designed to indoctrinate Indigenous youths into mainstream, Anglo-Protestant American norms, used football, and by extension, Indigenous bodies, to promote its “civilizing” mission.
