The study of political science teaches us that change is possible, that progress is achievable, and that justice can be won. As a 2023 Shippensburg University graduate, Vincent makes these ideals a reality.

Ship’s political science program offers unique features that set it apart from other universities. One of the standout features of the program is its focus on experiential learning. Students have the opportunity to participate in internships with government agencies, political campaigns, and non-profit organizations, giving them valuable hands-on experience and practical skills. The program also participates in the Washington Model Organization of American States (WMOAS), where students participate in simulated international diplomacy in Washington D.C. for a week, and gain experience in public speaking, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

PROBLEM SOLVING AT WASHINGTON MODEL ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES (WMOAS) GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The WMOAS is a simulation exercise supported by the institute for Diplomatic Dialogue in the Americas. During the WMOAS students engage in general debate, lobbying, caucusing, and participate in working groups. This was Vincent’s third time at WMOAS. His first one was on Zoom due to COVID-19. With two more in-person experiences under his belt, including WMOAS vice president and lead presenter for Shippensburg University, he’s served multiple roles in the exercises, and feels more articulate and better prepared to tackle law school.

Vincent finds the WMOAS Hemispheric Model focusing on the west especially valuable because of the diverse groups of student committees he was able to work with during his week at the event. He was able to hear draft resolutions for problems in South American countries, and Germany. The students were natives of those countries which really helped solidify the experience for him. Shippensburg University is located between the state capital and the nation’s capital, making it an ideal place to study political science and gain experience and access to all levels of government.

COMMUNITY-CENTRIC

Another unique aspect of the program is its emphasis on community engagement. Shippensburg’s political science faculty are active in the community, regularly partnering with local organizations to address pressing social and political issues. This provides students with opportunities to engage in meaningful community service projects and gain a deeper understanding of the real-world implications of political science research.

In addition, the program offers a range of courses that cover diverse topics such as environmental policy, human rights, and global politics, providing students with a broad understanding of the field. The faculty in the political science program are also highly experienced and accomplished scholars who are engaged in research, ensuring that students receive a rigorous and up-to-date education.

CITIZEN OF THE WORLD

Pursuing a graduate degree in law after completing an undergraduate degree in political science is a smart choice for many reasons. First, a law degree can provide students like Vincent with a deeper understanding of legal concepts and principles, which can be highly valuable in a range of careers. Law school can also provide students with opportunities to develop specialized expertise in areas such as corporate law, environmental law, or international law.

This expertise makes graduates more marketable and competitive in the job market. In addition to enhancing career prospects, pursuing a graduate degree in law is a valuable experience in its own right. Law school provides students with opportunities to engage in intellectual exploration and challenge themselves in new ways. Many law school programs also provide students with opportunities to participate in clinics, internships, and other practical experiences, which can help students develop real-world skills and make valuable connections in their field.

A political science degree is more important now than ever before in today’s complex and interconnected world. As we face challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and global security threats, there is a critical need for individuals who can navigate the complex landscape of government and public policy.

It provides students with a valuable set of skills, including critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others. It is our goal at Shippensburg University to prepare students to be informed and engaged citizens so they can make a positive impact on their communities and the world around them.
