Shippensburg University is honored to announce that all six programs within the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering are now ABET accredited. With the announcement of the accreditation of the civil and mechanical engineering programs, Ship now offers accredited programs in computer science and civil, computer, electrical, mechanical and software engineering.

ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Inc.), the nonprofit accrediting agency for degree programs in applied science, computing and engineering fields, granted the accreditation after a nearly two-year application and review process. ABET accreditation provides assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards of the profession for which that program prepares graduates.

“Shippensburg University is proud of the growth and development that is taking place in the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering. This accreditation is a testament of our commitment to quality and our promise to meet the needs of the workforce of Pennsylvania. I thank the members of our faculty and administration who have worked diligently to create and maintain programs of such a high standard,” said Dr. Charles E. Patterson, president of Shippensburg University.

Ship launched its Computer Science Program in 1974 and the addition of a Master of Science in computer science quickly followed. Committed to meeting workforce needs in the state, computer engineering was added in 2011, followed by software engineering in 2012 and electoral engineering in 2015. In 2018, civil and mechanical engineer programs were launched along with the establishment of the School of Engineering. In 2022, the school was rededicated as the Milton and Doreen Morgan School of Engineering in recognition of a generous gift from Milton ’76 and Doreen Morgan.

Shippensburg University is the only school in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education to offer six ABET accredited programs. The programs are unique as well in their commitment to engaging with employers to ensure students gain the skills needed within their respective industries. Hands-on learning with state-of-the-art equipment and through projects, research and internships, is also a distinctive priority within each program.

“This is a huge accomplishment. Theses accreditations were critical for both the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Programs continued success. It ensures that students majoring in mechanical or civil engineering at Shippensburg University will be able to get the credentials they need for jobs in those fields upon graduation,” said Dr. Charles Girard, director of the Milton and Doreen School of Engineering.
