Monaghan recently published two articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. The first was titled: “Schooled Families: Higher Education and Familial Virtue” and was published in the journal Sociological Perspectives. The second is titled, “Can the Promise of ‘Free’ Improve College Attainment? Lessons from the Milwaukee Technical College Promise” (co-authored) and was published in the journal Research in Higher Education.
In addition, Monaghan had three papers accepted and posted online with Brown University’s Annenberg Institute’s EdWorkingPapers site: The papers are: (1) “How Powerful are Promises: A Systematic Review of the Causal Mechanisms and Outcomes of “Free College” Programs in the United States”; (2) “What is a College ‘Promise’ Program: The Creation and Transformation of a Concept, 2005-2022”; and (3) “Some Promises are Worth More than Others: How ‘Free College’ Programs Impact Postsecondary Participation, Destinations, and Degree Completion” (co-authored with SU undergraduate Elizabeth Hawke).
Finally, Monaghan was recently awarded a $6,000 grant to study dual enrollment and other early college credit programs in Pennsylvania by the PA Department of Education.
