“This started as a simple idea that has turned into an awesome collaboration,” Emily Javitt, the director of campus life, said.
Shippensburg University is proud to celebrate National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on Wednesday, April 2, with an event that raises funds and awareness for college student food insecurity.
Javitt stated that the event’s purpose is to fundraise for Big Red’s Cupboard through the SU Foundation’s Day of Giving campaign, raising awareness about student food insecurity and creating a fun experience for the broader campus community.
“Our goal with PB&J Day is to do three things: fundraise for Big Red’s Cupboard through the SU Foundation as part of their Ship Gives campaign, bring awareness to college student food insecurity by having Big Red’s Cupboard present with resources and information and to have fun!” Javitt said. “Who doesn’t love a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich?!”
Big Red’s Cupboard, the SU Foundation, Aramark, the Office of Campus Life, Marketing & Communications and the Activities Programming Board (APB) have all collaborated to make this event a success. Volunteers from across campus will be on the Quad from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. handing out free PB&J sandwiches.
In addition to free sandwiches, the event will feature awareness and fundraising stations, raffles hosted by APB and a PB&J display where attendees decide what makes the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich. An allergen-friendly station will also be available.
