Chandler Garrett gains global business experience in Portugal

Chandler Garrett, a senior majoring in entrepreneurship at Shippensburg University, spent part of his summer in Porto, Portugal, gaining global business experience while exploring the culture of one of Europe’s oldest cities.

“My work involved a three-week program to design and build a business plan,” Garrett said. “This was an extremely insightful course because it allowed me to build a start-up and gain real-world feedback, and to adapt and overcome challenges that came along the way.”

Garrett shared how the program allowed him to gain new business strategies that will serve him in his studies at Ship. “I learned many entrepreneurial tips and tricks that I can incorporate into my classes here at Shippensburg that will help me with my projects ahead,” he said. “I also learned that I can build these projects much faster than I could imagine with the right group and the right mindset.”

In addition to his time in the classroom, Garrett also explored the culture of Portugal. On the weekends, he explored downtown Porto’s food and history scene with classmates, with whom he stated he formed close bonds, often reflecting on their progress together, all while enjoying what Porto had to offer.

“The culture of Portugal was beautiful, the food was amazing and the academics were extremely insightful,” he said. “Going out to restaurants on the weekends was a great time. The food in Portugal was extremely flavorful, with hints of port wine blended with glazes and sauces, always made for the best meals and conversations.”

In addition to classroom learning and time exploring, networking with professionals proved to be just as valuable. Garrett had the opportunity to meet industry leaders who provided feedback and advice on his team’s project.

“Being able to connect with leaders of industries and gain their insight was spectacular,” he said.

For Garrett, his time abroad in Portugal was more than just an educational experience; it was also a chance to gain real-world experience in the global business market. As he prepares for his senior year, he stated that he feels equipped to bring “innovation and creativity” into his future projects at Ship.

This opportunity is made possible through the charitable support from the Shippensburg University Foundation for the Charles H. Diller Center for Entrepreneurial and Business Innovation  program at Shippensburg University. Additionally, beginning next year, it will expand to include engineering students along with entrepreneurship students. Philanthropy plays a key role in creating opportunities like this through the Diller Center.
