Communications, Journalism and Media (CJM) alumna Paige Shope’23 spent her years at Ship gaining hands-on communications experience as the former managing editor of The Slate, a world news anchor for SUTV and public relations director at WSYC. Shope remained dedicated to becoming a leader in media, currently serving as the communications and marketing manager for the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC.
“My work includes event promotion, social media strategy, newsletter creation, website content, creative asset development and cross-team collaboration, Shope shared. “At its core, my role is about translating complex initiatives into clear, engaging messaging that connects with members, partners and the broader community.”
Ship’s CJM program provided her with the skillsets needed to thrive at the Chamber & CREDC. “The CJM program gave me hands-on opportunities that allowed me to fully immerse myself in the world of communications. Through extracurricular involvement in SUTV, The Slate and WSYC, I gained opportunities that taught me how to create meaningful content, work under deadlines, collaborate with peers, navigate challenges and still enjoy the creative process. Having those experiences readily available encouraged me to take initiative and build practical skills that I rely on daily in my current role.”
Shope’s time leading The Slate taught her more than just how to manage a newsroom; it shaped her professional growth. “Serving as Managing Editor of The Slate showed me the value of saying yes. I never set out to become Managing Editor, but when the opportunity presented itself, I took the chance,” she said. “Through that role, I learned every aspect of publication management, from writing and editing articles to page layout, meeting deadlines, overseeing printing, budgeting and marketing. It reinforced that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar territory. That experience also led to meaningful friendships and professional confidence that I continue to carry with me.”
Visual storytelling has become an essential skill for Shope. She noted that an advanced photography course in the CJM program provided her access to professional equipment and knowledge that has helped her in her career. One assignment in particular that stood out to her was a bridal portrait session. “It pushed me far outside my comfort zone and introduced me to a completely new style of photography. I often think back to that class when photographing events today. Capturing genuine moments like laughter, conversation and connection helps convert the energy and purpose of an event,” she said
From video editing and public relations to campaign development, the CJM program prepared Shope to become “a true jack of all trades.” Her varied skill set has allowed her to shape campaigns that combine photography, design, copy and distribution strategy to reach diverse audiences.
Shope also credits faculty and her cohort for helping her take risks and grow. “I would like to acknowledge my advisor, Dr. Drager, who consistently pushed me to be more ambitious and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. I’m also grateful to my fellow CJM peers who are all doing incredible work today. Our CJM cohort was ambitious, driven, supportive and I continue to root for everyone who was a part of it,” Shope said.
Her advice to students aiming to become communications professionals is as follows: “Get involved and don’t limit yourself to one area or one organization.” Shope highlighted that during her time at Ship, she took risks, tried new roles and learned from each experience. “It’s okay to not have everything figured out right away. Ask questions, explore opportunities and be willing to step into unfamiliar spaces. That’s where growth happens,” she said.
Today, Shope applies her multimedia skills to bring visibility to the people, businesses, and initiatives shaping the Harrisburg region. Her work reflects the foundation she built through Shippensburg’s CJM program and student media organization.
