Ship celebrates StewardSHIP Week with Arbor Day tree planting event

On April 25, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the pavilion near the hockey rink, Shippensburg University will hold its annual Arbor Day tree planting event, as a part of StewardSHIP Week. This event is led by the Residence Hall Association (RHA) in collaboration wih the university’s grounds crew.

“Planting trees has been a cornerstone of our work,” said Sean Cornell, associate professor of geology. “They remove carbon from the atmosphere, trap sediments, reduce erosion and help filter harmful chemicals from groundwater and runoff.”

Beyond having environmental benefits, Cornell emphasized the positive impact that green spaces have on our mental health, physical wellness and academic performance.

“Study after study shows that exposure to nature supports student success,” Cornell said. “It’s a great thing to partner with RHA and facilities every year as part of our commitment to both the university and our students.”

Students and all members throughout the community are encouraged to attend this free event and contribute to Shippensburg University’s green spaces.
