Preservation Pennsylvania, the commonwealth’s statewide historic preservation organization, selected the project “Empowering Communities to Preserve Historic Resources in the South Mountain Region” as the winner of its 2025 Leadership in Education Award. Professor of History Dr. Steven Burg led the project that was funded by a South Mountain Partnership grant in collaboration with partners from the Shippensburg Center for Land Use and Sustainability, the Cumberland County Planning Department, the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office, the Cumberland County Historical Society, and independent historic preservation consultant Christine Musser. The project aimed to increase public awareness of historic preservation methods and resources by creating a free, digital 92-page preservation guide and hosting four in-person public workshops across the region, which engaged hundreds of area residents.

Dr. Curtis Zaleski, Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Dr. Curt Zaleski was invited to contribute a chapter to the technical textbook Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths. The chapter, “Molecular Recognition, Magnetic, and Photophysical Properties of 3d-4f metallacrowns,” was recently published. The chapter is a review of the metallacrown field from 2019 to the present. Co-authors include his collaborators, Dr. Vincent Pecoraro at the University of Michigan and Dr. Stéphane Petoud at the Center of Molecular Biophysics, part of the French National Center for Scientific Research.

Dr. Heather Sahli, Professor of Biology

Dr. Heather Sahli and undergraduate students Ashley Adelgren and Ryan Haskins attended the Pennsylvania Botany Symposium, where they presented a poster on their research, entitled “Reproductive Biology of Dwarf Iris (Iris verna).” In attendance were also Shippensburg University emeritus faculty, Dr. Larry Klotz, as well as several SU Biology alumni.

Dr. Yucong Liu, Associate Professor of Information Systems and Analytics

Dr Liu recently had two of his manuscripts published in high-impact academic journals. The first, Approaching Human-Level Data Coding? A Systematic Comparison of OpenAI, DeepSeek, and Human Coders in Qualitative Analysis of Customer Reviews was published in the Journal of Applied Business and Economics (ABDC C), 27(5).

The second, co-authored with his colleagues (S. Zheng and Z. Lin), titled “Cash, Risk, and Return: Decoding Precautionary Motives”, was accepted and is forthcoming in the International Review of Finance (ABDC A).

Dr. Liu also presented two of his other research projects at national conferences. The first, “From Resources to Processes: Advancing the Concept of Dynamic IT Capabilities,” can be found in the proceedings of the 48th National Association of Business, Economics, and Technology Annual Conference (NABETus). The second, “From Accuracy to Validity: Reconceptualizing AI’s Role in Qualitative Coding of Customer Reviews”, can be found in the proceedings of the 48th National Association of Business, Economics, and Technology Annual Conference (NABETus).

Dr. Brian Ulrich, Professor of History and Philosophy

Dr. Ulrich is presenting his paper “The Uyunids of Eastern Arabia and Bahrain: What Makes a Dynasty?” on November 25, 2025, at the Middle East Studies Association annual conference.

Dr. Sharnine Herbert, Associate Professor; Dept of Communication Studies

Dr. Herbert will receive a presidential citation from NCA President Jeanetta Sims for distinctive service to NCA as an inaugural Virtual Learning Opportunity Presenter. She will be formally recognized at the Presidential Address and Awards Presentation on Saturday, November 22, at 5:30 PM in Colorado.

Dr. Allison Carey, Professor of Sociology Dept of Sociology & Anthropology
