Through study abroad programs and partnerships, Shippensburg University allows students to broaden their perspective of the world and experience different cultures, all while earning academic credit and professional growth.
Over the Fall/Winter 2025 semester, senior business management major with a concentration in international business, Cameron Bowser, studied abroad at the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. Bowser’s time abroad was facilitated in part by WorldStrides, a program that helps students gain international academic opportunities. During his time in Bilbao, he gained a deep appreciation for different ways of life.
“It was amazing to experience a culture and way of life that’s different from where I grew up. I found it to be an incredibly enriching experience,” said Bowser. The knowledge he gained within the classroom, exploring the streets, the food markets, the conversations he had with locals, and the breathtaking scenery made for an immersive and gratifying experience.
Bowser’s favorite memory was a visit to Palma de Mallorca, an island territory off the coast of Spain. “It was tranquil yet still beautiful, and there were many things to do.” The trip offered a change of pace from the energy of Bilbao, one that was relaxing and down-to-earth.
The food and cuisine also made for a memorable experience. “During my entire time abroad, I ate the best food. Whether it was Italian or a steakhouse, the food was amazing. Even now, I struggle to find the words to express how good it was.”
Bowser gave credit to Mary Burnett, director of the Global Education Center at Shippensburg, and Genoveva Garcia-Gallardo, his program director in Bilbao, for their help and guidance. “Without them, I couldn’t begin to think how different my experience would’ve been.”
His experience was also funded in part by the Robert and Lorie Miller Klinger College of Business Study Abroad Scholarship through the SU Foundation.
For students considering a study abroad program, Bowser’s experience in Bilbao serves as a reminder of how fulfilling it can be to explore different regions of the world. Ship encourages students to learn more about the study abroad opportunities available through the university, and is here to support students throughout the entire process.
