The Slate, Shippensburg University’s award-winning, student run news outlet was selected for five Student Keystone Media Awards in the 2020 DII competition.

Winners include:

First place photo story – “2022 Women’s March Gallery” by Allyson Ritchey and Paige Shope

Second place for website – www.theslateonline.com; The Slate staff

Second place review – “Don’t Worry Darling” by Paige Shope

Honorable mentions – “Black in the Classroom: SU and predominately white institutions; The N-Word: The horror and hierarchy of hearing racial slurs in the modern day; Where is the beauty supply store?” by Monika Lewis

Honorable mention feature photo – “Black Violin breaks musical boundaries” by Allyson Ritchey

The Student Keystone Media Awards contest recognizes high school and college journalism that provides relevance, integrity, and initiative in serving readers. Entries were evaluated based on the following: subject matter (worthiness, reader appeal, relevance, full development); presentation (pleasing style, literary excellence, incisiveness, research, enterprise, originality); effectiveness (objectivity, persuasiveness, reader identity, reader response). Pennsylvania news editors and collegiate news advisers served as judges for the contest.

The Student Keystone Media Awards Event will be held in Harrisburg on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
