Two technology infrastructure upgrades will take place tonight:

  • Local & long distance phone lines: Oct 13 9:00pm to 10:00pm – External phone calling unavailable during this time.
  • University network upgrade: Oct 14 12:00am to 1:00am – A brief network outage is expected around 12:30am.

Local & long distance phone lines

External phone calling will be unavailable on Tuesday October 13 from 9pm to 10pm while CenturyLink upgrades university local and long distance phone lines. This upgrade will both save costs and modernize the university phone service.

Internal campus calls dialed with a 4-digit extension on university Cisco phones will not be impacted.

If you need to reach University Police during this outage, please call 717-532-2503.

If you have an emergency, please dial 9-1-1 .

University Network Upgrade

To meet the unprecedented Internet demand this semester due to online courses and meetings, the university is actively working to increase bandwidth. On Wednesday Oct 14 (12:00am-1:00am), a hardware upgrade will be performed on the university firewalls to increase bandwidth from two 1GB links to two 10GB links. This will be similar to a highway increasing capacity from two lanes to ten lanes.  While this will be a major enhancement to on-campus network capacity, other factors contribute to WiFi and network performance. To optimize WiFi performance, students should review the instructions for maximizing WiFi usage in residence halls. If you are experiencing any issues with university network performance, please contact the university Technology Help Desk at 717-477-4357 or helpdesk@ship.edu. Technology staff will investigate and assist you with the issue.

For questions, please contact Dr. Amy Diehl, Assoc VP & Chief Information Technology Officer or Greg Day, Director of Network, Telecommunications and Infrastructure
