Dear Campus Community,

I write to you this evening following today’s news of the conclusion of the polarizing trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. Today, Rittenhouse was acquitted on all charges stemming from the August 2020 shooting deaths of two men (and the wounding of another) who were protesting the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

I recognize many of you may be experiencing strong emotions because of the verdict. Be reminded, this verdict or any other does not change the values that make Ship a community. As we continue our Hate Has No Home Here campaign, let us reaffirm that we condemn all racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and the differential treatment of others based on perceived ethnicity, color, religion, political affiliation, creed, ability, marital or veteran’s status.

We will soon call the community together in a forum to respectfully share thoughts, beliefs, and ideas. Stay tuned for details. I hope you will join us. We ARE one campus, many cultures.
