Since 1871, Shippensburg University has provided its students and its surrounding community with a laboratory school. Today, the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School (GBLUES) provides valuable hands-on learning opportunities for Shippensburg University students in all phases of their academic journey toward becoming teachers.

According to Dr. Cheryl Slattery, professor of Teacher Education, GBLUES allows students to take lessons from their classroom to the laboratory school to practice them.

“I’m there every single day. I work in the K classroom with America Reads. I get hands-on learning experience in assessment and tutoring and I’m not even student teaching yet,” said Jose Lopez, early childhood/elementary education major.

“The caliber of students we bring to Shippensburg University is of such high quality that I’d want my own children to be in the classroom with them, even as undergraduates,” said Slattery.
